As part of the Wenatchee Valley’s series of events on Memorial Day, there has always been a small ceremony to recognize and honor those who were lost at sea. In years passed, this took place on the black pedestrian bridge crossing the Columbia River with a ceremonial wreath being tossed out onto the water.
Due to construction on said pedestrian bridge this year, the Patriotic Council (who organizes the Memorial Day events each year) decided a new location was needed. Thanks to some swift networking, they were able to coordinate with the appropriate authorities for use of the Boat Launch located behind Pybus Public Market.
According to the article posted by VFW Post 3617, this ceremony involved a small color guard, an invocation, and the mayors of East Wenatchee and Wenatchee tossing the ceremonial wreath into the river. [Please follow the link to view more photos]
This new location turned out to be a great way for more of the public to attend and observe the ceremony, so we should expect it to be repeated annually. If you are in the Wenatchee Valley for Memorial Day next year, please try to come down to Pybus to join in honoring those Lost at Sea.
