Do you like to go fishing? Enjoy spending some quiet time on a boat with a couple other veterans? Then keep your eyes and ears focused on Operation Catching Freedom, a fairly new organization that organizes fishing trips for veterans and active duty military.
Tony Warren, a retired fishing guide and certified BBQ judge (what a combo, right?), enjoys fishing and providing a comfortable, relaxing, stress-free time for veterans, a chance to unwind with those who understand. He used to work with the Fallen Outdoors on such trips, but with fewer events held on the East side of the state, he decided to organize fishing adventures on his own. Having lived in Douglas county for over 53 years and building up a huge network of fellow fishing guides, food providers, and event hosts, it’s easy to see how Tony can organize and coordinate successful fishing trips.
The first major event Tony organized was a Bass fishing event at MarDon resort on the edge of the Potholes reservoir in Othello on Mother’s Day weekend in 2019. 15 pro tournament fishermen from the Central Washington Bass Club provided the boats, tackle, bait, and their time, each taking one veteran out on their boat for the day. It’s a large family event, with a dinner on Friday evening, breakfast Saturday before fishing and a big BBQ after all the boats come back in for the day. This event has become an annual one growing a bit each year (more free stuff donated for the veterans thanks to more sponsors), and from the sounds of it, 2022 is going to be even more fun!
But don’t think it’s wide open – Tony likes to keep these events small, fostering local connections and a sense of community for all involved. Most trips and events have limited slots open for veterans, often depending on how many boats and guides are available, which locations are open, and what the season looks like. Be sure to follow along on Facebook and Instagram for details about upcoming opportunities.
The next event that’s coming up is on July 10 – Operation Salmon at Chelan Falls. For this adventure, Tony has teamed up with Tour of Duty, to make sure the opportunity reaches as many veterans as possible. If you’re interested, check out the ToD Facebook Group and look for the pinned post with details on how to sign up.
Watch for more adventures with Tony to come up as his network continues to grow. I even heard something about a Golf Tournament fundraiser at Rock Island in the works…. Stay tuned!
