Why is membership in Veteran Service Organizations like the VFW, American Legion, and DAV dropping?
DAV fell below 1 million members in 2024 for the first time in 40 years.
VFW is down to 1.5 million, about half of what it was 30 years ago.
The American Legion is seeing the same steady decline.
It’s not because people stopped supporting veterans though. There’s a lot more happening. Here’s what’s really going on…
Our WWII, Korea, and Vietnam members are passing. Those generations built our posts, standing up when no one else would and bringing the org into their “modern day”. We’re losing hundreds of them every day as they are taken through old age or service connected disabilities. At the same time, today’s volunteer military is much smaller, necessarily meaning that there are fewer veterans overall to take their place.
Younger vets live differently. The older generation, the Draft vets, came to the posts for drinking, war stories, and (sometimes) to escape. The yourger vets, many who served around 9/11 and the subsequent wars, can connect with others online rather than retreating to a bar. They are also balancing raising their families and maintaining their jobs, which naturally takes up a LOT of time. If a Post feels like nothing more than “grandpa’s bar,” they’ll probably avoid it.
All local groups are struggling. It’s not just veteran organizations. Elks, Masons, Lions Clubs, even churches are seeing the same trend. People don’t join civic groups like they did 50 years ago.
So why should veterans join a Veterans Service Organization today?
We fight for your benefits. Trained service officers help with VA claims for free. DAV, VFW, and the Legion secure billions for vets every year. And that number is growing. Our Leaders meet on Capitol Hill to hold our government accountable.
Nobody gets left behind. Buddy Checks, rides to VA appointments, help after a house fire or disaster, vehicle break down and honor guards. When life hits, you only have to ask and your local Post shows up.
Camaraderie that gets it. You served. So did we. Sometimes you just need to be around people who understand without you having to explain. Beer and cigars not required.
It’s for your family too. Kid-friendly events, scholarships, youth programs, plus the Auxiliaries give the whole family a place. And if your Post doesn’t have these things yet, ask why not. If there’s an experssion of interest, maybe they will expand…
We protect what you served for. Flags around town, school programs, honor guards for funerals. We keep patriotism alive right here at home. Every veteran, regardless of branch, era, lenght of service, whatever, can see the value in that.
The posts that stay active are holding steady, and some who are willing to try new things are even growing. Putting up flags, helping with claims, and hosting events, isn’t always enough to draw in the younger crowd. Modernization, meeting the veterans where they are in life, and giving each other fresh purpose will bring in the new members when we need them most.
Step out of your comfort zone of the “old ways” and embrace the change that will allow your organization to grow and flourish, and continue fighting for veterans every day.
